Costa de Cocos

Xcalak
Lower Yucatan
Chetumal Bay (Border with Northern Belize)

Costa de Cocos is a newer operation located on the furthest southerly point on the Yucatan Peninsula a few minutes from the small fishing village of Xcalak (400 inhabitants). The famous Chetumal Bay is right out the front door step, and across the bay is the northern tip of Ambergris Caye, Belize. Xcalak is 250 miles south if Cancun literally at the end of the road.

Costa de Cocos is an attractive destination to consider because of the incredible quality of the fishery, but also because of its all-inclusive nature and amazingly economical price point. CDC means it when they use the terminology “All Inclusive”. Other than commercial airfare to Cancun and gratuities for the staff and guides, absolutely everything is included during your visit. Furthermore, most lodges on the Yucatan or in Belize require guests to spend a full week at the lodge. With three night / two day minimums, Costa de Cocos can accommodate guests for a long weekend if desired.

As with many destinations in the central Caribbean, Chetumal Bay is a wonderful fishery for those anglers seeking diversity and a high number of different species to target. Anglers can expect bonefish, permit, tarpon, and snook to be available year-round, making it a great destination for the fabled “Grand Slam” of saltwater flats fishing.

Chetumal Bay, a vast fishery, is a ten minute boat run from the lodge. Here you will find your prototypical sandy flats and miles of mangrove lined coastline ideal for backcountry tarpon and snook fishing. Bonefishing on Chetumal Bay offers anglers a unique chance to find larger than average Mexican sized bonefish, and a very reliable permit fishery as well. The average sized bonefish here is around three pounds, however there are a surprising number of 5-7 pound bonefish found in Chetumal Bay. While most permit fishing is done from the boat, there are plenty of wading opportunities for bones on shallow, sandy flats. CDC operates five traditional panga fishing boats. They are well equipped with comfortable seating and reliable outboards. Costa de Cocos also offers opportunities to fish beyond the reef trolling for deeper water species such as dorado, wahoo, grouper, snapper, or even sailfish and marlin.

The resort has sixteen individual and double occupancy cottages that have recently been remodeled following Hurricane Dean. All cottages extremely private and are tastefully decorated and constructed of local tropical hardwoods. Although simple, accommodations at CDC are very clean and comfortable. Lodge owners David and Ilana Randall run a very efficient operation, yet maintain a pleasantly laid back atmosphere. The resort is situated amongst a gorgeous palm grove on a beautiful beach complete with hammocks and palapa umbrellas. With such a wonderful setting and a fully open beach bar, it is not hard to get into the Caribbean spirit at CDC.

The resort can accommodate up to 32 guests at full capacity, however they only operate five fishing boats for a maximum of ten anglers at one time. Most guests visiting CDC are on a basic beach-going holiday or are there for Costa de Cocos’ diving program.

32 Guests total in 16 double occupancy cottages
10 anglers per week max

The first step in traveling to CDC is to fly commercially to Cancun, Mexico. All guests must arrive into Cancun and clear customs NO LATER than 3:00PM. Once in Cancun, there is more than one way to travel to Costa de Cocos…

The simplest and most economical method of getting to CDC is to allow the CDC staff to pick you up at the airport and drive you down the coast approximately five hours to Xcalak. Many guests will opt to make a modest investment in a private air charter to provide more timely transportation. Air charters are surprisingly inexpensive, especially with a party of 4 or more participants. Please inquire for details.

Although not mandatory, CDC encourages clients to either arrive or depart on a Saturday if possible.

Day 1
Travel commercially to Cancun, Mexico (CUN). Arrival and clear customs before 3:00pm local time. The lodge also encourages clients who are cutting it close to simply spend the night in Cancun the night before driving down to the lodge. Although this is also by no means mandatory (and not necessary if originating in Texas), it can ease the stress involved for those traveling on tight connections.

Upon arrival into Cancun, guests are met by a representative from the lodge and driven five hours to Xcalak. Note that the road all the way down to Xcalak has been re-done with comfortable and speedy blacktop. Alternatively, we can organize a charter aircraft to provide air transport to a strip ten minutes from the lodge.

Day 2-?
Fishing Days on Chetumal Bay with Costa de Cocos.

Departure Day
No fishing on day of departure. Return to Cancun for commercial connection back to the USA.

Costa de Cocos offers world-class scuba diving and snorkeling. Located along the southern reaches of the world famous Palancar Reef (second in size only to the Australia’s Great Barrier Reef), the lodge is a diving/snorkeling enthusiast’s paradise. Three fully equipped dive boats, each operated by a certified dive master, stand ready to transport large or small groups to a number of magnificent dive sites along the Palancar—where breathtaking coral formations and countless tropical fish species are the norm. Costa de Cocos has several sea kayaks as well, which are at your disposal to explore the expansive flats, channels, and backwaters along the edge of Chetumal Bay. The lodge can also arrange birding expeditions and Mayan ruin/cenote tours.
