History of Howler Brothers
If you’ve ever heard the Howlers Brothers famous tagline, HEED THE CALL, you might be wondering where it comes from. This goes back to when the founders Chase Heard and Andy Stepanian were on a surf trip down in Costa Rica, where they heard the loud calls of the Howler Monkey. For those of you that haven’t heard this call, trust us, it’s loud and intimidating and leaves you wondering what could possibly be making this incredible sound. Thus, how they came up with Howler Brothers. A culture that might not be bound by blood but bonded by the calling we all share of surfing and fishing. Heard and Stepanian set out to build a brand inspired by what they love to do with the perfect combination of both function and style. A clothing line that is made for both on and off the water.
Howler’s crafted limited run, high quality clothing, and goods with an influence from waves, water, geography, fashion, and art has taken the outdoor industry by storm these past few years. Based in Austin, Texas, the vibrant and creative culture provides daily inspiration on anything new. With a combination of small batch production and collaboration with artists and craftsmen they create unique, alternative offerings other brands lack to provide. They avoid traditional or trendy ideas and create original clothing everyone here at Tailwaters has come to use and love. One can quickly glance at the brand and come to realize that it’s not just a clothing company, it’s a movement centered around adventure, exploration, time on the water, and most of all spending those moments with your friends.
Heeding the Call at Tailwaters
Tailwaters Fly Fishing Co and Howler Brothers have a long and thriving relationship going back to the beginning. David Leake often tells the story of the time Howler Bros co-owner, Andy Stepanian called to pick his brain about “the idea of a clothing company brand for fishing and surfing folks with the name inspired from a trip to Costa Rica with his buddies”. Being Texas based has, of course, helped the relationship, but really what has made it work for us and our Howler partners is the fact that they are awesome people with a very sincere mission. Since Andy, Chase, and Mason started Howler Bros, David’s childhood friend (and the OG marketer in the early days of YETI), Rick Wittenbraker came on board to help get them to the next level. They continue to crank out creative, stylish, functional and beautiful clothing while developing a cult following through their inspiring branding and marketing efforts. We are proud to be hermanos with the Howler crew and will always HEED THE CALL!
