    Trout & Timber Outfitters Overview

All-Inclusive Packaged Trips to the White River?

Until now, the incredible fishery of the White River system has been lacking a proper fly fishing outfitter specializing in customizable trips to the region. Recognizing this niche, Trout & Timber Outfitters is the first of its kind to offer a completely hassle free, convenient, affordable, packaged angling vacations inclusive of ground transportation, upscale lodging, and meals.

Trout fishing in the Ozarks is the Real Deal

When most anglers imagine great trout fishing in the continental United States, they typically think of the fabled western rivers like the Big Hole or the Madison. However, perhaps the lower forty-eight’s greatest trout fishery is nowhere near the Rocky Mountains… Northwest Arkansas is often overlooked and always underappreciated by those who have not fished it. This is not a “bubba” trout fishing trip in the least, rather a very sophisticated and traditional trout fishing experience with high volume numbers and the opportunity for ENORMOUS trout, prolific hatches, seasoned guides, and a gorgeous setting.

    Super Nice Lodging

Trout and Timber houses their fishermen in the five star White River Inn B&B just outside Mountain Home. The White River Inn offers the most upscale accommodations on the river, and is ideally located on a bluff overlooking the entire valley – perfectly situated within convenient striking distance to the fishing. The lodge owner has spared zero expense is creating the ultimate “lodge” atmosphere with excellent service, great food, and luxurious bedrooms.

Head Guide & Owner Forrest Smith

Forrest Smith is a fourth generation Arkansas native who has spent ten years guiding fly anglers in the Ozarks of Northwest Arkansas. For such a youngster, his impressive resume also includes four seasons guiding in Alaska as well as three seasons in Chile and Montana. Forrest has taken the most sophisticated techniques learned from his days guiding around the world and applied them to the fertile fisheries of northern Arkansas… something totally unique relative to 99% of the guides in the region. The kid just knows how to find fish, loves his dry flies, and is a perfect gentleman and host to anglers of all skill levels.

Smallmouth on the Buffalo River is as good as it gets

While the majority of the guide traffic focuses on the trout game, the undiscovered jewel of the Ozarks is the world class smallmouth fishing. Trout & Timber is one of only three outfitters licensed to guide overnight trips on the Buffalo River – home of perhaps the best smallmouth fishing in the lower forty-eight. Trout & Timber is also the only fly fishing outfitter in the system.

Trout & Timber fishes nine rivers/creeks (plus two lakes) including the White, Little Red, Norfork, and Buffalo river systems. The area is renowned for its HUGE brown trout often exceeding 15, 20, or even 30 pounds - but also has healthy populations of rainbows, cutthroat, and brook trout. The White River alone has over 80 miles of fertile trout river that fishes well 365 days a year. The White also has more 5+ pound fish per square mile than any other river in the continental U.S. In addition to the prolific trout fishing, Trout & Timber also organizes day trips and overnight camping trips for smallmouth bass on the famous and stunningly beautiful Buffalo River.

    The Fishing

Trout & Timber employs the area’s best fly fishing guides, many of which are seasonally imported from Montana and trained up by Forrest. They operate with a fleet of hard bottom drift boats as well as both jet and prop propelled jon boats, and framed rafts – granting access to the entire region regardless of river or fishing conditions.

Northern Arkansas is a fish factory, period. It boasts some of the highest fish counts, and more trophy trout (including two former world records) than anywhere in the country. With that being said, it is truly a river system that caters to everyone. Novice anglers enjoy the constant action and great fish numbers while the true trophy hunter will also find his or her place stalking some of the biggest browns in the world. A typical few days in the area yields several rainbows in the 14-18 inch range, a handful of larger fish over twenty inches, and the occasional freak brown trout measured in pounds not inches.

The White has consistently held the world-record sized brown trout (40 pounds) since the Bull Shoals Reservoir was completed in 1951. The Norfork and Little Red are both tributary tailwaters of the White, and each are incredible trout habitats as well. The Norfork is most famous for its Dry-Run Creek section that is available for children under the age of 16 (a great place for youngsters to learn fly fishing).

The river system is unique for enormous numbers of “nice” sized rainbows in the 14-18 inch range as well as the gargantuan specimens you only dream about --- but don’t think it is too good to be true. All three rivers offer every type of trout fishing style and technique from wading shallow riffles, dead drifting dries, and of course epic streamer fishing. The White is a perfect river to float in a drift boat, and traditional and often massive hatches of mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, and midges are prevalent throughout the year. The annual shad kill is another feeding frenzy on the White that can be a home run for BIG trout in the winter, and the river is LOADED with scuds, crawfish, and all kinds of terrestrials. Trout don’t get his heavy without a protein diet… and the night fishing with small mammals such as mouse and lemming patterns can also bring the big ones to hand.

    Buffalo River Smallmouth Trips

While the majority of the guide traffic focuses on the trout game, the undiscovered jewel of the Ozarks is the world class smallmouth fishing. Trout & Timber is one of only three outfitters licensed to guide overnight trips on the Buffalo River – home of perhaps the best smallmouth fishing in the lower forty-eight. Trout & Timber is also the only fly fishing outfitter in the system. His overnight trips are well equipped with the proper gear, tents, cots, warm showers, and support personnel reminiscent of a proper float trip down the Smith or Gunnison. The Buffalo valley is stunningly beautiful, and an ideal remote wilderness experience for those interested in getting way off the beaten path.

    Accommodations

Trout and Timber houses their fishermen in the five star White River Inn B&B just outside Mountain Home. The White River Inn offers the most upscale accommodations on the river, and is ideally located on a bluff overlooking the entire valley – perfectly situated within convenient striking distance to the fishing. The lodge owner has spared zero expense is creating the ultimate “lodge” atmosphere with excellent service, great food, and luxurious bedrooms.

The White River Inn has a guest wing with three luxury suites. The guest suites, about 400 square feet each, all have private entrances from inside and to the patio. Each suite is impeccably decorated, featuring 10 foot walls and 14 foot vaulted ceilings, custom made mission-style furniture, a sofa, individual climate control, fireplace and a private bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub. Each suite provides the guest with a television, satellite TV and wireless internet.

In addition to their unique guest rooms, guests have complete access to a magnificent great room and the spacious trophy room and multiple patios offering you incredible views, fireplaces, large screen TVs and incredibly comfortable furnishings. The kitchen kicks out the best food in the area, and the bar is stocked with the beverages of your choosing.

    When to Go

Northern Arkansas is truly a 365 day a year fishery! The time to go is when you can get away, however the following represents a seasonal breakdown for the fishing style and conditions:

    Spring

The Spring season kicks off in March with the first bit of true hatch action. Anglers will choke on the thick caddis hatches of March and April, with the sulphurs coming off in May and early June. This season caters to the true dry fly enthusiast. While the dry fly guy is lining up reach casts to pods of risers, the other anglers are stripping streamers for enormous browns, and slamming smallmouth in the warm water rivers. As per usual, tailwater nymphing tactics will always produce a lot of fish in all four seasons.

    Summer

This is a great time to get the kids out. It’s as simple as shorts, sandals, and bent rods. There's also nothing wrong with catching two footers on terrestrials. This is also a great time for topwater action in the smallmouth rivers -- Nothing beats smallies and poppers.

    Fall

This is typically the start of the trophy trout season. Big fish leave their haunts, and start their march to the spawning grounds while putting on the feed bag at the same time. Stunning Fall foliage in the hardwood forests of the Ozarks hits peak in October and November. It’s not a tough one to sell, and tends to be the busiest time of the year so BOOK EARLY.

    Winter

This is the time of year the guides are truly hoping for a day off. Some of the best streamer action can be had from December to February. February is also the time for the "Arkie salmon fly hatch" or the shad kill. Thermally shocked shad are sucked through the dam in the coldest part of winter, and the fish absolutely go nuts. This is the best chance in the world to catch a double digit weight brown on a dry fly.

    Non-Angling Activities

What outfitting guide service in Arkansas would be complete with world-class waterfowl hunting? Forrest also guides duck hunts on one of the area’s best green timber marshes during the winter time. Ask for details if interested.
