Destination Details

Destination Description

Alaska Steelhead Co is located near the town of Ninilchik, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula.  Ninilchik is known for its prime location between the big towns of Homer and Kenai. This allows anglers to experience rivers that are far less crowded than other areas of the peninsula. Ninilchik has lots of Russian influence. From names of rivers such as the Koselof, to old Russian Orthodox historical sites. Ninilchik is also well known for multiple lookout points to experience the mountain ranges across the Cook Inlet. On clear sky days, guests will get breathtaking views of the four Volcanoes located directly across the Cook Inlet, Mt. Augustine, Mt Iliamna, Mt. Redoubt, and Mt. Spurr.

Upon arrival at the lodge, the main room is the first thing you will see. A giant fireplace, comfortable seating and easy access to the bar can be found in the main room. Next to the main room, guests can enjoy the game room. Complete with a pool table, ten person poker table, jukebox, and a private patio with a full fireplace. On the other side of the lodge is the dining room, a stunning 14 seat round table sits directly center, with an adjacent fireplace. The dining room also has a private patio complete with a full outdoor kitchen and fireplace. The upper floor of the lodge has a small gym and a peloton for guests who would like to workout throughout their stay. The lower level of the lodge consists of a private breakfast nook and the master bedroom. The master bedroom is an extra expense for guests needing a larger room or for those that wish to stay in the main lodge. The master bedroom has a private outdoor patio with an indoor and outdoor fireplace. The main lodge also has two bathrooms near the front entry.

Anglers will be pleased to know that steelhead opportunity is accessible to everyone with Alaska Steelhead Company. Steelheading usually has a negative stigma in the industry as being an “ Expert Only” species, accompanied by limited opportunity and harsh conditions. Alaska is unique due to the abundance of healthy steelhead willing to eat flies through the season. This can be exciting for guests wanting to check the box on a difficult species, without having to hop on a multiple year waiting list for the chance to catch a single fish on more pressured rivers in the lower forty-eight.

The Fishing

The primary species targeted as the lodge name suggests is steelhead! Steelhead enter the five different river systems ASC has to offer from the Cook Inlet, and anglers will oftentimes catch bright chrome steelhead with sea lice still attached to them every day. Because these fish are fresh out of the ocean, guests are in for an incredible fight, usually with screaming runs, multiple aerobatic displays as each fish attempts to come unbuttoned.

Depending on the river fished each day, techniques and equipment used can change day to day. Guests that fish the Kasilof for example, may be able to use traditional longer spey rods swinging flies for steelhead, or on the smaller rivers, anglers can use single hand rods and switch rods.

Because everything in Alaska revolves around the salmon runs, nymphing with egg patterns can be very effective on all of the rivers fished throughout the week. Guests can get familiar with fishing egg patterns and catch a few fish every day, or for the hardcore guest, swinging flies for the entire week can be just as effective.

On any given day, guests may fish from a traditional drift boat, and walk wade ideal runs and gravel bars, or hike into the smaller rivers for those who prefer to walk wade fish all day. ASC also provides possibly the most exciting form of transportation to the river with their new Heli Program.  2 guests accompanied by a professional guide, and experienced helicopter pilot, have the chance to explore runs and riffles walk wade crowds simply can not access, A must for anglers looking to catch the fish of a lifetime and fly through the Alaskan wilderness in style!

Alaska Steelhead Company allows guests to fish five different river systems, all with unique differences and opportunities for steelhead – in addition to giant rainbow trout, silver salmon, and dolly varden. Customers have the option of swinging flies for steelhead on the larger rivers, throwing dry flies and mice on the smaller river systems, and or nymphing egg patterns for trophy sized rainbows. The diversity offered at ASC allows everyone to have a change of scenery along with experiencing different techniques that can be used for steelhead fishing.

Helicopter Program Options

Alaska Steelhead company has introduced a new and exciting way to experience the local rivers, fish water that has not been touched, and enjoy the breathtaking views surrounding the lodge. The exploratory helicopter program checks all of those boxes. Every angler at the lodge has the option of adding one or more helicopter days to the menu each week, and is no doubt the coolest mode of transportation to the river. Two guests accompanied by an experienced helicopter pilot and guide, get to lay casts in pools and runs that have little to no pressure. The chance to catch a wild steelhead on dry flies, mice, and swung flies minutes after exiting the helicopter, is as good as it gets.
